Saint Ignatius' College has a tradition of educational excellence established by the Jesuit Fathers in 1951. Our appeal rests in our strong sense of community and the values we celebrate. All aspects of a Saint Ignatius' College education have one common purpose: the formation of the balanced person with a personally developed philosophy of life.
At Saint Ignatius’ College, students can undertake VET courses in Year 11 and can be negotiated in Years 10 and 12. These can be pursued internally or externally and support in program selection is offered through extensive course counselling to guide students in their exploration and pursuit of a career path, to ensure that subjects studied enhance and maximise the success of completion of the SACE. Students access a broad range of courses from various RTOs, and the College is a member of the East Adelaide School Cluster (EASC), which offers VET programs.
For a full list of all available courses, visit http://easc.org.au/. Some courses may require Work Placement and students are also able to choose to undertake separate Work Experience in specific weeks of the year. More information on this is available from the College’s Work Experience Coordinator.
Saint Ignatius’ College also offers a Certificate III in Media in partnership with Access Skills Training. This is embedded into the Year 10 and 11 timetable and is studied over two semesters. This course reflects the role of a skilled operator in the digital film and television production industry. Students will be provided with DSLR cameras and professional video equipment to shoot a range of structured programs from scene re-enactments and music videos to documentary and short film productions. Students will work in a range of practical roles, including collaborative pieces and individual task competency-based assessments across a comprehensively structured theoretical base. Students will also learn how to broadcast and stream their products across both school and local community networks. The course is delivered in class and all the resources are provided through our online portal in our customised course. Students will be provided with all the necessary resources and materials including computers, software, lighting, microphones, cameras, etc. The course is delivered in our new Film and Media studio that was designed with this course in mind. The assessment of this course includes observational competencies, peer-related tasks, term tests, worksheet and essay-based assignment work. This course has been developed with both TAFE and university pathways in mind.
At Saint Ignatius’ College we also have a vibrant Careers Program, providing students with many opportunities to explore the world of work and learn the skills necessary to traverse a constantly changing world. We offer Career Education opportunities in both formal career education settings, and through cross curricular settings embedded within subjects. We offer many formal programs such as ‘World of Work’ and ‘Introduction to Careers’ sessions in the middle years, the subjects Personal Learning Plan in Year Ten and Workplace Practices at Stage 1 and 2 through SACE.
As part of the Personal Learning Plan subject, every Year Ten student at Saint Ignatius’ College completes a Workplace Learning Placement and many more also take up this opportunity in Years 11 and 12. Within this PLP subject, students undertake a ‘Job Seeking Skills’ unit and complete a Mock Interview to prepare them for entry into the workforce. A highlight of this program is our annual Careers Market where students from Years 10 to 12 can access information about post-school options as well as VET and volunteering opportunities, drawing upon our generous school community, tertiary providers and registered training organisations.
At Saint Ignatius’ College, we recognise that parents play a very important role in students' career education journey and development. Parents are informed of events, news, information sessions and trends in the world of work through a fortnightly newsletter, The Ignatian. We also provide links to the Career Tools website to facilitate parental access to high quality resources and current Careers advice.
Our staff at Saint Ignatius’ College are well equipped to guide our students through their career journey, regularly completing Professional Development to ensure that they are up to date with current trends in the world of work and advancements in Career coaching methodology. Saint Ignatius' College PLP and Careers staff are accredited practitioners of the highly-regarded Coaching Young People for Success Program and our practices are informed by research and monitoring of graduate student destination data.
