Samaritan College caters to the education needs of Whyalla parents and caregivers who desire an alternative, faith-filled Catholic education for their families. Our goal is to support you, as the first and ongoing educators of your children, to assist in the formation of capable, responsible, resilient and hope-filled citizens. We are student-centred in our approach, having a focus on developing the whole person. This means we do not limit ourselves to just the academics, but also foster a child’s spiritual, social, emotional and physical development and well-being. In preparing them into responsible young adulthood, there is also an expectation that students learn about committing to community life and are therefore expected to be involved in all aspects of schooling at Samaritan.
Vocational Education and Training (VET) is an excellent choice of study for many students. It always includes practical, hands-on learning, and it can lead to jobs in many fields. Studying VET as part of the SACE gives students a head start on a qualification, which is a great way to fast-track progress towards a rewarding career, while also developing independence and time-management skills.
As part of their SACE, students can complete VET that is within the AQF (Australian Qualifications Framework). The SACE Board recognises VET that:
The SACE enables students to include a significant amount of VET in their SACE studies. Students can gain recognition for up to 150 SACE credits at Stage 1 and/or Stage 2 for successfully completed VET.
School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships
The training students do as part of a School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) can also count towards your SACE. An SBAT gives students a unique opportunity to combine VET training with an employment contract whilst still completing their SACE. SBATs are generally highly valued by employers and are a valid pathway for students to transition from school to employment, further training or higher education. SBATs are not just available in the traditional trade pathways, such as plumbing, automotive, hair and beauty, building and construction, for example, but can be undertaken in areas such as business and administration, and sport and recreation, just to name a few.
VET for tertiary entrance
VET can count towards tertiary entrance for university and TAFE. For completed VET qualifications to count as Recognised Studies, they must be:
VET can only count to a maximum of 20 credits in an ATAR and/or a TAFE SA Selection Score. Students also need to satisfy all other university entrance criteria.
Students who complete a TAFE/VET Certificate III are also eligible to apply for undergraduate courses at Flinders University. The TAFE/VET does not need to be related to their selected area of study at university, but they will be ranked on the level of their TAFE/VET qualification – the higher the qualification, the more competitive students will be in obtaining admission to Flinders University, and the course of their choice.
