Mary Mackillop College is an outstanding Catholic girls’ school that is known for excellence in education and leadership for girls, pastoral care and academic results. This excellence is brought to fruition through holistic, inspiring and enabling education that leads our students to ‘Know more, Do more and Be more’.
Our curriculum focuses on the academic, social and emotional development of the young women in our College, while our learning programs are designed to develop student confidence, knowledge and the capabilities relevant for an increasingly globalised and digital society.
At Mary MacKillop College, Vocational Education is used as a career exploration tool and as an opportunity to develop industry networks.
Most VET programs are accredited towards the SACE and the students also gain a nationally recognised qualification which links to further training or higher education.
Students attend VET courses through external providers or other schools either after hours or as a one day a week program. Students have undertaken courses in Hair & Beauty, Animal Studies, Business, Food and Hospitality, Early Childhood Education and Individual Support.
Student career development begins in earnest with the Personal Learning Plan. Students are led through the Coaching Young People for Success modules that help them understand their interests, ambitions and possible future directions.
During the PLP, students participate in Futures Week. This is a full week of activities related to future pathways, developing skills needed in industry and the workplace and an opportunity to experience the changing nature of careers, employment and study. Visits to all three Adelaide universities and TAFE SA expose students to tertiary study options while guest speakers explore topics such as resume writing, successful interview techniques, managing your social media profile, innovation and running a business, STEM careers and pathways and looking after yourself.
The Careers and Employment Expo is another opportunity for students to experience the vast opportunities available to them as they plan their life beyond school. All Year 10 students attend this annually.
Career chats provided by recent old scholars who are now in employment in their chosen fields allow the students to understand the variety of pathway available and expose the girls to many avenues available in different fields of study and employment.
In the Senior years, visits from university, TAFE SA and other tertiary providers give our students the information they need to make effective and meaningful choices in consultation and in sharing of information with the Director of Curriculum or relevant Pastoral Care Coordinators.
As part of the Catholic Education SA STEM Learning Initiative, STEM vocational pathways have been included under the Students tab for all VET courses listed in the CESA Directory. The website contains detailed information about Registered Training Organisations (RTO) and Accredited courses. Contact the VET and Careers Coordinators at your schools for further information.
